Programs

2007 - 2008

October 8,2007

A Water Fest

After the water shortages we’ve experienced earlier this year, methods of water conservation and information about horticulture that can withstand such conditions are of great interest. Fran Shaw, Master Gardener and our own Garden Club member, will present "Native Plants that Survive Florida Summers and Drought", followed by a presentation on "Rain Barrels" by Fred Burkey, Multi-County Extension Agent, Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Programs, Martin/St. Lucie Cooperative Extension Service.

November 12, 2007

Following the Lewis and Clark Trail

Two local Master Gardeners, Tony and Florence Chatowsky, will share their marvelous experience when they pursued the route these famous early explorers took across our great nation. The Chatowskys focus on the flora and fauna they saw during their trek, some of which surely were native to the areas they passed through.

December 10, 2007

Designs with Grocery Store Flowers

John Klingel, AAF, AIFD, PFCI, author of THE FRUGAL FLORIST, and designer/instructor at South Florida Center for Floral Studies in West Palm Beach, will present designs we can create inexpensively. His designs will be raffled, and his book and other items will be available for purchase.

Lifestyles of Butterflies in the Garden

Growing interest in the establishment of gardens which attract butterflies is evidenced by our Club’s participation in FFGC’s Butterfly Sanctuary Certification Program, as well as the newly established butterfly gardens the Club is sponsoring at Bessey Creek and Hospice. An expert on the subject, Alana Edwards, of Environmental Studies Education and Training at Florida Atlantic University, will deliver delightful comments and show us some of these marvels of nature.

February 11, 2008

Fantasy Flowers by Rose

Following an early morning workshop on "contrived" flowers (Hands-on class, 9-11:30 a.m. today, $10 fee, which includes supplies), Rose Vickers, Past President of Flower Show Judges, Instructor and Master Judge, will demonstrate to the entire membership at our 1 p.m. program how she creates beautiful flowers from colorful corn husks and other natural materials. You won’t believe these beauties! (And you’ll want to reserve space in the earlier class before it fills up!)

March 10, 2008

Designing Terrariums

Terrariums will be a new feature of our 2009 Flower Show, and our own Garden Club member Janet Foell just happens to love this miniaturized form of gardening. Janet will demonstrate how to select the best plants and containers, as well as how to create and maintain winning designs.

Bonus: Janet will offer one of these terrariums as a raffle prize!

April 15, 2008
