Academic Scholarships

GARDEN CLUB OF STUART, INC.
Applications available in the fall from Guidance Department at any Martin County High School. Student must be a graduating student of a Martin County High School with a "B" average and planning to major in agriculture, environmental issues, city planning, marine biology, horticulture, landscape design, forestry, ecology or a related subject. Three $1,000 scholarships available.

FLORIDA FEDERATION OF GARDEN CLUBS, INC.
Student must have a "B" average, in need of financial aid and enrolled full time in a Florida college, planning to major in agriculture, environmental issues or a related field. Application must be received between January 1 and May 1. Applications available from Chairman Marie Harrison, FFGC, 166 Edge Avenue, Valparaiso, FL 32580. When applying, please specify if entering freshman or sophomore years as these have a different application from junior, senior and graduate students. Interview by chairmen of Garden Club of Stuart, Inc. essential. (Virginia Maloney 772/220-0054 or Kathy Mann 772/286-7784) Scholarship amount is determined by scholarship committee each year with a maximum of $2,500.

NATIONAL GARDEN CLUBS, INC.
Applications available from Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Chairman Marie Harrison, FFGC, 166 Edge Avenue, Valparaiso, FL 32580. Student must be planning to major in horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, conservation, forestry, botany environmental control, city planning, land management and/or a related field. Forms are available in September and must be completed and received before March 1. Scholarships offered to advanced students. Student must be legal resident of Florida with a "B" average, in need of financial aid and enrolled full time in an accredited college. Scholarships in the amount of $3,500.

DEEP SOUTH REGION SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must be a high school senior residing in a deep south state ( Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi or Tennessee.) Student must pursue a course of study in a garden or environmental related field. Application forms are available from FFGC Chairman Marie Harrison (address above) in the fall and completed applications must be received by the same chairman no later than February 1. Scholarships in the amount of $1,000.

Arbor Day Planting

A yellow cassia tree was planted in memory of Marty Holland in Menninger Park in 2009. The Junior Gardeners also honor Arbor Day with commemorative tree planting in Jensen Beach honoring a former student. Please report all trees you plant, in public and private areas, to Chair Carol Davis.

Awards

Annually, an outstanding member of the Garden Club is honored as "Woman of the Year", and a person who has been active in the community, but who is not necessarily a member of the Club, is eligible to receive the “Community Service Award.” Additionally, we will be promoting National Garden Club and FFGC Awards to our many deserving members.

Blue Star Memorial

As part of the Club’s participation in the redesign of Stuart’s Memorial Park, members will fund, design, and install a memorial area, including plants and a historical marker honoring our Nation’s service persons. Chair: Joan Wilcox.

Butterfly Sanctuary Certification

We assist Club members, community organizations, and residents in selecting larval and nectar plantings that qualify for FFGC butterfly sanctuary certification. Chairs: Jean Foley, Terri Pinder, Ann McCormick.

Arbor Day Planting

Camp Wekiva Scholarships, Counselors, Leadership Our Club and Circles sent 17 young people to Camp Wekiva in 2009, and we will award camper scholarships in 2010. Club members are eligible for leadership training support. Call Li Roberts for Leadership Course information, as well as about camper sponsorship and scholarships.

Arbor Day Planting

Design & Horticulture At alternate meetings throughout the year, either Phyllis Gidley will discuss one of her designs, or Terri Pinder will add to our knowledge of horticulture.

District X

Club members serve on the District X Board and enjoy the annual Tropical Short Course, as well as Fall, Spring and Gabfest Meetings. Our Club will host the Fall 2010 District Meeting.

Membership includes nine active judges and two emeritus judges. The Club would like to encourage members to seek training to become Flower Show Judges and Landscape Design Instructors.

Garden Therapy

The Club supports garden therapy for mentally challenged adults at ARC (Advocates for the Rights of the Challenged) in Stuart. Chairs: Virginia Maloney and Ruth Van Harken.

Junior Gardeners

We sponsor elementary school garden programs at Bessey Creek, Joan Graff, Chair; and Jensen Beach, Jane Mills, Chair. Second and third graders are introduced to the world of gardening, and member participation in this rewarding program is welcome.

Libraries

The Club allocated $400 to Martin County libraries for gardening and environmental books for youth and adults. Anita Teague, Chair.

Mothers & Infants Striving for Success

We are donating design and plants for a gardening and meditation space to assist women as they rebuild their lives. Chair: Donna Pearlman, Terri Pinder.

National Garden Week

June 1-7, 2010. Flower Designs by Club members will be placed in five Martin County Libraries and Stuart City Hall. Proclamations lauding National Garden Week and The Garden Club of Stuart will be presented by the City of Stuart and Martin County Commissions. Chair: Barbara Kaufmann.

Possum Long/Memory Lane

Please help our volunteers maintain Memory Lane on the first and third Thursdays of the month, 8:30-10:30 a.m. Louise White, Chair.

University of Florida Martin County Master Gardeners

Among our members are 23 Master Gardeners, and all Master Gardeners are invited to our programs and trips.
